Sandstone on one side, mudstone on the other, fill over both.
LWD testing and DCP testing are often worth adding in Birmingham, because the ground is rarely what the geology map says. The Birmingham Fault splits the city. To the west, under the centre, the Jewellery Quarter, Edgbaston and Harborne, Sherwood Sandstone drains freely and gives good, steady CBR values. To the east, through Bordesley, Small Heath and Yardley to Solihull, Mercia Mudstone weathers to a red clay that trims well dry and softens fast when wet, so a formation CBR can halve between a dry week and a wet one. The Rea and Tame valleys through Digbeth, Saltley and Perry Barr carry soft alluvium. Over all of it lies made ground, foundry sand, slag, ash and demolition rubble, which varies from bay to bay. Sandstone design values do not carry across to the mudstone, and one good result on fill proves very little.
