Chalk Testing
Chalk testing to establish suitability for use as an engineered fill
In all aspects of engineering geology of chalk perhaps the most important property is its intact dry density and saturation moisture content and is a requirement of Highways England chalk fill testing. The saturation moisture content of intact chalk lumps can be used, together with the chalk crushing value, to classify chalk in relation to its behaviour as a freshly placed fill material. This test is based on the determination of the dry density of the chalk lump, using the “Immersion in water method”, and the calculation from it of the potential moisture content at saturation, assuming a value of 2.70 Mg/m3 for the particle density of the chalk solids.
Chalk is a Tricky Material!
To be sure you know what you are dealing with let us get your chalk fill tested as it can be highly variable
A range of testing
Saturated moisture content and lump dry density are just two of many possible chalk tests we could carry out for you
Chalk can be great fill material
Although it needs knowledge and experience it can be a very cost effective fill material when controlled and tested
